Can a forensic accountant bring down a G.O.D. Dictator?
Bryce Carr is a retired NHL hockey player and forensic accountant. In his playing days, he never backed down from a fight, wouldn’t let others intimidate him. When the US government asks him to track down some offshore bank accounts, he accepts, but quickly realizes this is a game he shouldn’t have started.
The GOD Dictator A Thriller edition by James Piper Literature Fiction eBooks
Former NHL player Bryce Carr went into a new line of work once his playing days were over. He became a partner in an accounting firm that specializes in forensic accounting. Now instead of scoring goals, he scores by digging out the dirt on the bad guys' hidden funds in banks and investments all over the world. It's not usually a very dangerous business, but this latest assignment has placed him in grave danger since he's started seeking out the funds of a West African country that has just been taken over by a coup. The new dictator and his minions will stop at nothing to keep from losing control of the billions of dollars gained from their country's oil reserves. The premise of the story is one that could have been taken out of modern headlines, and the main character having been a hockey player was a bonus for me since I'm a big hockey fan. There were several references throughout the book about Bryce's playing days, but there were no references to how or what he did after retiring from hockey that made him choose his new career, which I found disappointing. I would have liked a bit more back story on the character in order to understand him better. The story also needed additional explanations about the types of activities that the forensic accountants do and the differences in the types of funds they seek out. I was lost on the story point about the reserve funds of the fictional country of Tengo being somehow different than their other funds. And again I was lost by what Bryce did at the end and how and why that would be considered legal or even do-able by an outside accountant.
Another plot point bothered me even more when an important supporting character underwent an extremely traumatizing event yet never had any reaction to her treatment in the story. There is absolutely no way any woman, however modern and professional, could have gone through that without more of a reaction that colored the way she looked at things afterward. To continue with her job under trying circumstances immediately afterward without even a mention of it is unrealistic in the extreme.
The book could also use a bit of clean up in poor grammar of several of the characters and a number of typos. (Having characters with an advanced education say "had went" is like nails on a chalkboard to me.) There are a couple of lines of "ciphertext" at the beginning of each chapter. According the the Author Notes at the end, decoding these is not critical to the storyline, but it would have been nice for the author to have included either a translation or a key to how to decipher the code at the end of the book.
Despite the several failings, this book is still an exciting adventure story that is a real page-turner. The inner geek in me found the look into the world of forensic accounting fascinating, even though the realist in me knows that very few cases are as big-ticket and exciting as this one was.
Moderately recommended.
